Osteoarthritis of knees and other joints can be due to normal wear and tear. Obviously some people are effected worse than others, but virtually all active adults and geezer jocks will have at least a touch of it.

Officiallly, who gets osteoarthritis (OA)?

OA, also known as degenerative joint disease and sometimes referred to as osteoarthrosis, occurs more frequently in adults and is the most common form of arthritis. It can develop in younger people, in whom it is usually results from a joint malformation, injury to a joint or as a result of a joint cartilage genetic defect.

What is Osteoarthritis?

OA is a condition where the cartilage in joints is deteriorating. Cartilage, which is hard and slippery, covers the ends of bones. Healthy cartilage permits bones to glide over each other and it helps absorb the shock from pounding forces.
When cartilage is worn away or damaged, pain and stiffness results from bone rubbing directly on bone. Over time the joint can become deformed, bone spurs (osteophytes) may grow, pieces of bone or cartilage may chip off and remain in the joint space. All this producing more joint pain and damage.

What helps osteoarthritis in knee joints?

In my situation, after years of running, jumping rope, basketball, volleyball, etc. my knees started to ache and swell. On the advice of a very smart doctor, I stopped gulping ibuprofens and switched to a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement and aspirin.  It is working.  My knees are great, and I'm back to being as active as ever.
